The L87 problem is a bottom-end manufacturing defect in GM's 6.2L truck/SUV V8. It is not a "bad oil change" issue and it is not a valvetrain/AFM lifter issue. GM told NHTSA the engine can lose propulsion without enough warning to be safe. That is the defect in Raimondi's Escalade.
What the L87 is
• RPO L87: naturally aspirated 6.2L Gen V small-block V8 used in 1500 trucks and full-size SUVs (not the 5.3L; not the Escalade-V supercharged engine).
• Assembled at Tonawanda Propulsion (Buffalo, NY).
• Suspect production window GM used for the recall: March 1, 2021 - May 31, 2024.
• A 2023 Escalade with VIN 1GYS4FKL7PR176227 sits in that window.
Two root causes GM admitted
GM's Part 573 recall report lists supplier manufacturing and quality issues, not a clean-sheet design error:
1. Sediment on connecting rods and in crankshaft oil galleries
Debris left from machining/casting contaminates the rod-bearing oil film. That scores bearings and can spin a rod bearing.
Connecting rods have been tied to American Axle & Manufacturing (part family around
12714549).
2. Out-of-specification crankshaft dimension and surface finish
A crank that is out of spec or too rough does not carry a proper hydrodynamic film. Bearings wipe, then seize.
Crankshafts have been tied to Questum Macimex in Mexico (assembly around
12732518).
GM said both suppliers changed processes on or before June 1, 2024. Replacement engines for the recall were supposed to use parts after that suspect window. Independent teardowns of failed L87s have shown all eight rod bearings damaged and crank journals scored - consistent with oil-film collapse across the rotating assembly, not one bad journal.
What that does in the car: spun rod bearing ➔ rod knock ➔ broken rod or locked crank ➔ sudden loss of propulsion. In the worst cases the rod exits the block. GM also recorded some fires and crashes in the field file; it did not concede those fires were all caused by this defect.
What drivers actually feel
GM's owner letter lists:
• knocking, banging, ticking
• Check-engine light
• Hesitation, high RPM, odd shifting, reduced power
• No-start
• Complete seizure while moving
A common stored code on failed units is P0016 (crank/cam correlation) - a downstream effect of a damaged rotating assembly, not a timing-chain design defect. Raimondi's RO is the end-stage version: engine would not rotate by hand, starter fuse blown, metal in the oil and filter, highway shutdown with "Conditions Not Correct For Shift." That is a locked bottom end.
Scale (GM's own numbers, then NHTSA's)
From the April 2025 recall filing (through Feb 2025 data):
• ~597,630 U.S. vehicles in 25V-274; ~721,000 globally
• 28,102 U.S. field complaints/incidents GM treated as potentially related
• 14,332 of those with alleged loss of propulsion
• Also cited in later litigation summaries: 42 fires, 12 crashes, 12 injuries in the broader complaint set (treat fires as alleged, not all proven causal)
NHTSA's later work is the part that matters after a "pass":
• Complaints of failure after the recall remedy, on the order of ~499 in one public tally
(~473 after the oil-change path, ~26 after a prior engine swap)
• Additional failures outside the March 2021-May 2024 build window
• Engineering Analysis EA26005 (Aug 2026) looking at roughly 997,743 2021-2026 L87 vehicles
So the defect GM described is real, large, and not fully contained by the original inspection.
How GM tried to fix it
Safety recall 25V-274 / N252494000-002
Dealers run a GM PicoScope crank-NVH test through SPS ("L87 PicoScope Test"), engine held at ~2,000 rpm with oil temp in range.
• Fail ➔ replace the engine (Escalade labor is a full R&R; Raimondi's RO matches that teardown list).
• Pass➔ drain, 0W-40 (first Mobil 1 Supercar, later Mobil 1 FS), new filter, new 0W-40 cap, owner's-manual insert. Factory fill had been 0W-20; thicker oil is meant to buy film thickness over a suspect journal, not to remove sediment or correct crank geometry.
Raimondi's RO 320345 is labor op 9107931 - PicoScope Inspection - Engine Passed at
38,245 miles (Sept 2-3, 2025). That is the oil-change path.
Special coverage N252494003
Not a second recall. If the same rod/crank condition later kills the engine (seizure or P0016, no neglect/hydrolock), GM replaces the engine for 10 years/ 150,000 miles from original
in-service date, any owner. Valvetrain failures are excluded. RO 327332 was billed as
N252494003-04 bearing failure.
003 is a warranty backstop. It is not a finding that the 000 inspection worked, and it does not require a new vehicle.
What the defect is not
• Not AFM/DFM lifter tick (different L87 complaint family)
• Not "owner ran it out of oil" unless the dealer documents empty sump or hydrolock - 003 says those are out
• Not cured just because PicoScope passed - hundreds of post-oil-change failures are why NHTSA reopened the file
• Not limited to high mileage - many failures are well under 60,000 miles; Raimondi failed at 52,398 after a clean inspection at 38,245
Why this defect supports a repurchase theory
The safety harm GM described to NHTSA is exactly what happened: propulsion gone on a public road. The "remedy" she received was the inspection-plus-oil track that NHTSA is now treating as potentially inadequate. Metal in the filter and a locked crank are the physical signature of the admitted rod/crank defect, not a maintenance dispute.
003 then authorized another L87 long-block. That addresses the dead engine. It does not answer:
• why a "PASSED" PicoScope missed a defect that seized the engine 10 months later,
• whether a service/reman L87 from the same family restores a new $125,000 Cadillac,
• or whether the VIN is now a disclosed salvage-of-confidence vehicle (recall+ special coverage+ highway seizure+ replacement engine).
Those last points are warranty and consumer-protection arguments. The mechanical defect
