The Toyota bZ4X 2023–2025 was supposed to mark Toyota's confident entry into the all-electric era — a modern EV built for reliability. Yet, hundreds of owners are reporting the opposite experience: repeated Toyota bZ4X 12V battery failures that can leave the vehicle completely dead, even when the main battery is fully charged.
Across the U.S., frustrated drivers are discovering that the 12-volt auxiliary battery — a small component powering the electronics and starting system — is failing prematurely. Without it, the car won't even “wake up.” The result? Drivers stranded in driveways, parking lots, and on the road, forced to pay for bZ4X battery replacement, towing, and lost time.
When an Electric Car Can't Start
Owners describe a consistent and alarming pattern. The 12V battery drains within days of non-use or even while parked overnight. One New York owner wrote in a complaint to NHTSA:
“My 2024 bZ4X died twice in the first two months. The dealer replaced the battery — then the new one failed again. Toyota couldn't explain why.”
Another driver from California reported:
“My bZ4X has gone completely dead six times. No power, no response. I had to call a tow truck each time.”
These are not isolated events. According to NHTSA and consumer websites, dozens of complaints describe identical symptoms — warning lights flashing, “Parking Brake Unavailable” messages, and finally a total blackout. In one documented case, the tow truck found the 12V battery at just 4% of normal charge.
No Recall, No Fix — Just Replacements
As of late 2025, no Toyota bZ4X recall has been issued for the 12V system. Toyota dealerships have been replacing the auxiliary batteries under warranty, but the replacements often die again within weeks. Owners report that bZ4X battery warranty claims are accepted, but the underlying electrical or software problem is left unresolved.
In other words — a new battery doesn't fix the root cause. Toyota has not released a software update, service bulletin, or public explanation for why the 12V drains so quickly. This silence stands in contrast to other EV manufacturers like Ford and Hyundai, which issued updates when similar issues arose.
The repeated failures have serious consequences. Without a functioning 12V, doors, lights, and even the power button become useless. Owners have called it “the EV that won't start.”
The Toyota bZ4X Lawsuit
By 2025, frustrated consumers turned to the courts. A Toyota bZ4X lawsuit filed in California federal court — Wade v. Toyota Motor North America, Inc. — accuses Toyota of selling vehicles “not fit for ordinary use.” The lawsuit alleges that Toyota knew of the defect before sales began but failed to warn customers or fix it.
The plaintiffs include bZ4X owners from several states who experienced multiple dead batteries, towing expenses, and no permanent fix. One plaintiff reported three 12V failures within 5,000 miles, requiring two replacements.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for repair costs, towing, and diminished value — and potentially an extended bZ4X battery warranty for affected vehicles.
What Owners Can Do
Drivers who experience repeated Toyota bZ4X battery problems should document every service visit, repair invoice, and communication with the dealer.
Owners with substantial and recurring problems may be entitled to a refund or replacement under lemon law. Other owners may have claims for breach of warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Act.
