NHTSA Investigation into GM 6.2L (L87) V8 Engine Failures

Overview of the Investigation and Findings

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has conducted multiple investigations into General Motors' 6.2-liter V8 L87 engine, used in full-size trucks and SUVs. The primary issues involve catastrophic engine failures due to connecting rod bearing failures, which can cause engine seizure or a connecting rod breaching the engine block, often without prior warning.

Key Timeline and Actions:

January 2025: NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation (PE25001) after receiving complaints. It covered approximately 877,710 vehicles (2019-2024 model years), including Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/ESV.
April 2025: GM issued Recall 25V-274 for about 597,630–598,000 vehicles (primarily 2021–2024 models built in a specific period). Root causes were supplier manufacturing defects: sediment/debris on connecting rods and crankshaft oil galleries causing bearing damage, plus out-of-spec crankshaft dimensions and surface finish.
Remedies included engine inspection, potential replacement, oil change to higher-viscosity 0W-40, new filter, and updated oil cap.
Ongoing 2025–2026: NHTSA escalated with Engineering Analysis (EA25-007) and Recall Query RQ26001, investigating failures in vehicles outside the initial recall and post-recall remedy failures (including after full engine replacements). Reports include dozens of post-fix failures.

Extent of the Problem:

NHTSA and GM data reference thousands of complaints: e.g., 28,102 field incidents (with 14,332 loss-of-propulsion cases), plus additional reports leading to expanded probes. Issues affect high-mileage and lower-mileage vehicles; some replacement engines have reportedly failed quickly.
Related concerns (separate but sometimes overlapping) include Active Fuel Management (AFM)/Dynamic Fuel Management lifter failures, ticking noises, and oil consumption in GM V8s.  No widespread fatalities or major crashes directly tied in reports, but sudden power loss poses clear safety risks, especially while driving or towing. The investigations remain active as of early 2026, focusing on whether GM's remedies are adequate and if the defect scope is broader.

Legal Remedies for Affected Owners
Owners facing repeated engine issues may pursue several avenues. Additional Notes: Claims have been filed seeking compensation, extended warranties, or vehicle repurchase.

1. Breach of Express or Implied Warranty:

Express Warranty: GM's new vehicle warranty (typically powertrain coverage for 5 years/60,000 miles or more) covers defects in materials/workmanship. Failure to repair after reasonable attempts can constitute breach.
Implied Warranty of Merchantability: The vehicle must be fit for ordinary use (safe, reliable transportation). Persistent engine failures can violate this under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) and federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which allows lawsuits for breach of written or implied warranties, potentially recovering costs, damages, and attorney fees.
Many cases settle via warranty claims or extended coverage; class actions have alleged inadequate fixes.

2. Lemon Law (State-Specific):

Most states have lemon laws protecting new or certified pre-owned vehicles with substantial defects impairing safety, value, or use that cannot be fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts (often 3–4 for the same issue) or days out of service.  For GM 6.2L issues, qualifying defects include repeated engine failures, loss of power, or major repairs. Remedies typically include refund (buyback), replacement vehicle, or cash settlement (minus usage offset).

3. Consumer Fraud / Deceptive Practices:

Claims under state consumer protection laws (e.g., unfair/deceptive acts) if GM or dealers misrepresented reliability, failed to disclose known defects, or provided ineffective remedies.

4. Can I join or wait for the Class Action to be Resolved

Our office can provide prompt action, forwarding a claim to GM.  In contrast, the class action is expected to take years with a variety of legal issues: are claims similar, can someone with a 1 or 2 repairs be grouped with many.  If the class action is settled the overall amount may be large though individual claims can be limited.

Additional Notes: Class action lawsuits related to the 6.2L engine have been filed seeking compensation, extended warranties, and better remedies. Owners should preserve evidence, avoid signing broad releases without counsel, and consider NHTSA complaints for leverage.
