1. Class Action
A class action has been filed charging that certain Mazda vehicles have a defect which will cause coolant leakage and worse engine failure.
2. Defect in 2018-2021 Mazda 6, and Other Models
Specifically, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines in certain 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles (“Class Vehicles”) are defective because of a lack of structural integrity of a joint between the engine blocks around the cylinder heads and exhaust manifold (the “Engine Defect” or “Defect”). 3. The Engine Defect leads to engine coolant leakage. Loss of coolant causes the engine to overheat and catastrophic engine failure. The Engine Defect also allows engine coolant to leak into the engine's cylinders, damaging the cylinders. See Cauller v Mazda Motor America (C.D. Cal. 2024), Case No. 8:24-cv-1807.
Coolant is critical to the proper functioning of an engine and it's loss can lead to overheating, cylinder head cracking, stalling, and engine failure. According to the complaint, when coolant enter the combustion chamber, consumers may see white smoke from the exhaust, a product of burned coolant; experience engine misfires, rough idling, and poor fuel and engine performance as the combustion process is disrupted; and damage the engine, including the pistons, piston rings and cylinders.
