Kia Refill Inverter Coolant Light: What the TSB Doesn’t Say

Posted by Howard Gutman | Nov 29, 2025 | 0 Comments

If you own a 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid and keep seeing the Kia refill inverter coolant light, you may have heard there's now a “fix.” Kia quietly issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) and “Service Action” called SA515. On paper, it looks like the answer. In reality, many owners are still confused about what it means, whether they qualify, and what happens if the warning comes back.

This post explains what SA515 actually does, why most 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid drivers never received any notice, and the risks if the problem continues or returns.

What SA515 Really Says About the Coolant Problem

In 2023, Kia released TSB ELE271 / SA515, instructing dealers to flush and replace the inverter's low-conductivity coolant on certain early-production Sorento hybrids that show the “Refill inverter coolant” message. The bulletin explains that some vehicles can display the warning even when the reservoir is full, because debris in the cooling circuit restricts flow and forces the electric water pump to spin at unusually high speeds (around 2,800 RPM or more).

Kia has revised this same TSB multiple times (at least three versions between April and October 2023), which tells you this is not a minor, one-off concern. The Center for Auto Safety currently lists dozens of service alerts tied to the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid, including this inverter coolant Service Action.

In short: Kia knows that some 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid vehicles can repeatedly show a 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid refill inverter coolant warning because of a design or manufacturing issue, not driver error.

Why Most Owners Never Heard About SA515

Kia labels SA515 as a Service Action, not a recall. Across multiple bulletins, Kia defines a Service Action as a repair program without customer notification that is performed during the warranty period.

That means:

  • No letter in the mail. Unless you search or ask, you may never know SA515 exists.
  • The fix is only guaranteed while the vehicle is under warranty, unless Kia grants special approval.
  • Dealers see SA515 as an internal instruction, not a public campaign.

So even though Kia has documented this problem and created a procedure to address the Kia refill inverter coolant light, the company has chosen not to broadly alert 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid owners.

Who Qualifies and How to Request the Fix

SA515 applies to certain 2021 Sorento Hybrid models built in a specific production range, where Kia believes debris or contamination in the inverter cooling loop is most likely.

Practical steps for owners:

  • Call your Kia dealer with your VIN and ask whether Service Action SA515 is open on your vehicle.
  • Make clear that you own a 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid and you're experiencing the inverter coolant message.
  • Ask how long they'll need the car (the flush typically requires special equipment and may take a full day).

Usually, the dealer will flush the system with a dedicated machine, refill it with fresh low-conductivity coolant, and may update labels on the reservoir cap. The work should be performed at no charge if your vehicle is within the applicable warranty and campaign parameters.

When the Fix Fails – and Why That Matters

Not every owner reports a happy ending. Forum and social-media posts describe 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid drivers who had the SA515 flush done, only to have the Kia refill inverter coolant light come back weeks or months later. Some needed multiple flushes; others were told they now needed additional parts or that their coverage had expired.

Because SA515 is a Service Action, Kia can insist that any work outside the warranty period requires extra approval. For an owner whose warning started early but wasn't fixed correctly, that can mean paying out of pocket for repeat work on a defect the manufacturer already knows about.

That is where SA515's limitations become important: it shows Kia is aware of the inverter coolant issue on the 2021 Sorento Hybrid, but it doesn't guarantee a permanent fix or long-term protection if the warning keeps returning.

When to Get Legal Help

If you've had repeated SA515 repairs, ongoing warnings, or related drivability issues with your 2021 Kia Sorento hybrid, you may be dealing with more than a service campaign.

Owners with substantial and recurring problems may be entitled to a refund or replacement under lemon law. Other owners may have claims for breach of warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Act.
