The Scope of the GM 6.2 Recall
In April 2025, General Motors (GM) announced a sweeping recall of its full-size trucks and SUVs equipped with the 6.2L V8 L87 engine. The GM recall 6.2 covers approximately 721,000 vehicles worldwide, with nearly 600,000 in the United States alone. The affected models include:
- 2021–2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
- 2021–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe
- 2021–2024 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL
What's Wrong with the 6.2L V8 Engine?
The GM v8 recall centers on serious manufacturing defects in the crankshaft and connecting rod components. These internal engine parts may have been contaminated or built out of spec, leading to catastrophic engine failures. The result? Sudden loss of power, engine damage, and in some cases, complete engine failure-often without warning.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received 39 complaints of engine failures and launched an investigation into nearly 878,000 GM vehicles. GM's own data links the defect to at least 12 crashes and 12 injuries in the U.S.
How Widespread Is the Problem?
- Estimated 3% of recalled vehicles will require full engine replacement-about 17,929 in the U.S. and 21,630 worldwide.
- The recall affects vehicles built between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024.
- The issue is so severe that GM also issued a stop-sale order for all unsold 2024 vehicles with the 6.2L engine.
What Will GM Do?
Dealers will inspect affected engines. If your engine passes, it will receive a new oil filter, oil cap, and higher-viscosity oil. If it fails, the engine will be repaired or replaced at no cost to you. Notification letters will be sent to owners starting June 9, 2025.
