1. Buick Encore and Envista Engine Class Action
A class action has been filed alleging multiple engine problems on the Buick Encore and Envista
DONNA COOK, individually, and on behalf of a class of similarly situated individuals, Plaintiffs, vs. GENERAL MOTORS LLC, a Delaware Limited Liability Company, Defendant. Civil Act 6-cv-00229-UNA, United States District Court, District of Deleware.
Engines have failed requiring replacement and some owners report hearing a loud mechanical bang or knocking sound immediately before the vehicle decelerates and s, a connecting rod pierces the engine block, discharging oil and coolant.
2. Cause of Engine Problems
The Engine System Defect in all Class Vehicles is caused by improperly designed and/or manufactured internal components and lubrication pathways, including block porosity and oil-system faults. Manufacturer communications, TSBs, and field reports identify oil leakage from threaded fastener bores in the block, abnormal noise events treated as “normal,” and oil consumption and smoke associated with ventilation and cover assemblies; these conditions promote bearing distress, oil starvation, and connecting-rod failure. Publicly available Technical Service Bulletins TSBs include 20-NA-084, 23-NA-122, 23-NA-141, and 24NA-021, which address conditions tied to premature engine failure. TSB 24-NA-123 (September 18, 2024) applicable to 2024 Buick Encore GX, 2024 Buick Envista, 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and 2024 Chevrolet Trax discusses lubrication-related complaints and seepage on the 1.2-liter engine; emphasizes non-replacement remedies and directs sealant application or cover resealing rather than engine replacement.
3. Forums
Many complaints are noted on various automobile forums. According to ChevyTraxForum.com,rum, a consumer who purchased a 2025 Trax reported that after only “a week and a half” the vehicle started sputtering like it was going to die,” and displayed warnings including “service ESC, engine power reduced.
4. Lost confidence and Reasonable Opportunity to Repair
GM vehicles may be expensive and a consumer may see lost value and unreliabilty with a common engine problem. However, most courts require the consumer to give the manufacturer a reasonable opportunity to perform repairs. "We thus conclude that plaintiff had an obligation to allow defendants to try to repair the engine."
Palmucci v Brunswick, 311 N.J. Super. 607 (App. Div. 1998). Repair opportunity is not unlimited and with multiple problems, legal remedies are possible. Likewise, reasonable may include doing the work within a reasonable time period.
5. Compensation and Remedies
Owners of vehicles may be entitled to monetary compensation or in certain circumstances repurchase or exchange of vehicles.
