A. Chevrolet Silverado Transmission Complaints

 

One Chevrolet Silverado owner explains,  

18,000 miles

-My truck was purchased new and at 18,000 miles I have had the transmission rebuilt, replaced, rebuilt again, and now I am having problems again. When I drive the truck it shakes while driving and when stoping it down shifts 3 or 4 times hard.

 

36,000 miles

-I have had to have the transmission fixed now 3 times. There is no excuse for this. It slips out of 1st gear and it has this awful whinning sound that it makes that they say is "somewhat normal". I am sorry to say that a 2004 truck should not sound like that and I am sure that I will never purchase one again. 3 fixes since new! It has been taken apart and rebuilt 3 times! There is no excuse for a transmission needing repair after 100 miles and even worse that it never seems to get fixed just band-aids. Replaced tranny at 36k.

 

72,000 miles

-going down highway the transmission started throwing out transmission fluid profusely. Apparently the front pump bushing walked out of position and lead to the leak. Required transmission removal.

 

53,000 miles

-I Leased this Silverado new in July of 04 and by November of that same year I was on my 3rd transmission..... [ No towing , hauling, Plowing was done at all] NOW I have 53,000 miles and guess what another transmission problem... approx $2500 for repairs...... The only positive thing is GM is paying 75% of repairs.... But why am I having transmission problems again !!!! ??? Very Frustrated !!!

-THE VEHICLE HAS PROBLEMS SHIFTING FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR. SOMETIMES THE GEARS CHANGE SMOOTHLY, AND OTHER TIMES THERE IS A THUMPING SOUND ACCOMPANIED BY JERKING. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AT LEAST FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH. *AK IN ADDITION WHEN MAKING THE TRANSITION FROM A LOW SPEED TO A HIGHER SPEED THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE INTO THE PROPER GEAR. THIS MADE IT SEEM LIKE THE VEHICLE WAS IN NEUTRAL. THE DEALER FIXED THE PROBLEM WITH A RETROFIT KIT AND THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE. THE VEHICLE'S CD PLAYER WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE DEALER REPLACED AND REPROGRAMMED THE CD PLAYER. *NM

 

-WHILE BACKING UP THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK BACK AND SURGE. TRUCK WOULD NOT STOP CHANGING RMP UNLESS IT WAS TAKEN OUT OF REVERSE, PUT INTO NEUTRAL THEN PUT BACK IN REVERSE. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *BF THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. (2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD WITH AND ALLISON 1000 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). *NM

 

-WHEN VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR LESS THAN 2-3 MILES AND WHEN TRANSMISSION IS COLD THE FOLLOWING OCCURS: WHEN THE VEHICLE OPERATOR STOPS AT AN INTERSECTION, STOP SIGN, OR STREET CORNER - THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION CONTINUES TO PROPEL THE VEHICLE FORWARD WHILE THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THE RESULT IS THAT THE BRAKES ARE FIGHTING AGAINST THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE OPERATOR MUST PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. IN MANY CASES, THE VEHICLE TRAVELS WELL INTO THE INTERSECTION OR WELL PAST THE NORMAL STOPPING POINT BEFORE IT FINALLY COMES TO A HALT. THE RESULT HAS BEEN SEVERAL NEAR COLLIISIONS WITH CROSS TRAFFIC. THE DEALER HAS BEEN CONSULTED, BUT THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN: "UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM - ALL SYSTEMS OPERATING CORRECTLY" "THIS IS NOT TRUE!! THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY 16,000 MILES AND IS 18 MOS OLD - BUT THIS HAS OCCURRED NEARLY 10 TIMES. THE MOST RECENT IS 12/2/05. *NM

 

-A CLUNK SOUND EMANATES FROM THE DRIVELINE OF MY 2004 SILVERADO MOSTLY WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD AND FROM 3RD TO 2ND. THE CLUNK ALSO OCCURS BETWEEN NO ACCELERATION AND ACCELLERATION WHILE IN 2ND GEAR. OCCASIONALLY THE NOISE OCCURS BETWEEN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. THE PROBLEM BEGAN AT APPROXIMATELY 2000 MILES. IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE AS I NOW APPROACH 20,000 MILES. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT A DRIVELINE FAILURE OR DAMAGE TO DRIVELINE COMPONENTS DUE TO REPEATED TORSIONAL IMPACTS.*AK

 

-I HAVE A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO Z71 PICKUP CREWCAB AND A CLUNKING BEGAN IN THE TRANSMISSION AROUND 2000 MILES AND HAS WORSENED. THE TRUCK NOW HAS 19,000 MILES AND THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM AND IT WAS NORMAL FOR THIS TRUCK. I KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM FROM DOING SOME SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET AND WANT TO KNOW WHAT WILL BE DONE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM.

 

 

-CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. WHEN DRIVING TRANSMISSION SOUNDED AND RODE ROUGHLY. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER ON THREE OCCASIONS . DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CONTACTED. *AK

 

-TRUCK WILL NOT MOVE INITIALLY WHEN PUT INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE AFTER IT HAS BEEN PARKED AND JUST BEEN STARTED . AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO LOOSE FLUID IN TORQUE CONVERTER AFTER SETTING. THIS HAS BEEN SINCE NEW AND IS GETTING WORSE.

 

-DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE IN MOTION THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND JERKED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER GREASED THE DRIVESHAFT WITH HI-TEMPERATURE GREASE ON THE SPLEEN. AT 2000 MILES LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH, THE DRIVESHAFT SHEARED, BROKE AWAY FROM THE TRANSMISSION AND REAR END. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE PULLED ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHERE THE DEALER REPLACED THE DRIVESHAFT AND TRANSMISSION. *AK

 

-HARD SHIFTING FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR - SLIPPING INTO OVERDRIVE - EVENTUALLY FAILING TO UPSHIFT UNTILL RPM REACHED APRX 3500. *AK

 

-THREE YEAR OLD CHILD TOOK VEHICLE OUT OF PARK AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED AND CRASHED INTO THE CARPORT.*MR THE CONSUMER REQUESTED COMPENSATION FOR THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE BUT WAS DENIED. THE REPRESENTATIVE INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A DESIGN CHANGE THEREFORE HE COULD NOT RECEIVED COMPENSATION. *NM

 

-VEHICLE SHIFTED VERY HARD, AND THERE WAS AN INCIDENT OF SHUTTING DOWN. ALSO, DASHBOARD LIGHTS FLASHED ON AND OFF. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.*AK

 

-FAILURE OF THE NEUTRAL POSITION SAFETY SWITCH, 2004 CHEV SILVERADO DIESEL WITH ALLISON TRANSMISSION. THE SAFETY SWITCH SHORTS OUT AND FAILS DUE TO WET DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS FAILURE RESULTS IN THE TRANSMISSION GOING INTO A "FAIL SAFE" CONDITION THAT DOES NOT ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION TO SHIFT, STRANDING THE VEHICLE. CHEVROLET HAS REDESIGNED THE PART NOW 3 TIMES, BUT WILL NOT WARRANTY OR STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. THIS SWITCH HAS FAILED ON ME TWICE DURING SNOW CONDITIONS. *NM

 

- DT: 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONSUMER STATES THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAS A SLIP IN IT AND IT STALLS. THE DEALERSHIP INSISTS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND IT CANNOT BE FIXED. THE VEHICLE HESITATES AND THEN CLANGS WHEN IT CATCHES INTO GEAR. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THEY NEED TO SPEAK WITH THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE THEY COULD MAKE A DECISION. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE APPROXIMATELY FEBRUARY 2005. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL OF THE TIME. *AK

 

-AFTER TOWING A TRAILER AND PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE VEHICLE JUMPED AND TORE A PIECE OF RUBBER OUT OF THE TIRE. DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. HOWEVER, THE TRANSMISSION JUMPED FROM SECOND GEAR TO REVERSE WITHOUT WARNING. CONSUMER STATED THAT THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NO CODE SET, AND TO CONTINUE DRIVING, BUT THE CONSUMER REFUSED.*AK

 

-DT: WHEN THE VEHICLE SITS ON A GRADE IT WILL ROLL BACKWARDS WHEN IN DRIVE. THE TRANSMISSION WILL READ A FALSE NEUTRAL ON LEVEL GROUND. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THIS VEHICLE HAS A 4L80E TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM STARTED APPROXIMATELY A MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. HAS NOT HIT ANYTHING YET, BUT HAS COME CLOSE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. A SERVICE WRITER AT GROTH BROTHERS CHEVROLET TOLD CONSUMER IT WAS NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE TO DO THIS. CONSUMER HAS A CASE OPEN AT GENERAL MOTORS #1-258070464.*AK

 

-1. NOTICED TRANSMISSION SLIPPING OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS 2. A FEW WEEKS AGO, THE TAIL LIGHT, RIGHT TURN SIGNAL AND CRUISE CONTROL AND DASH LIGHTS STARTED MALFUNCTIONING 3. RECENTLY, THE PAINT AROUND REAR PASSENGER DOOR AND ROOF IS PEELING. *NM

 

-TRANSMISSION WENT OF GEAR WHENEVER THE KEY IS IN THE ACCESSORY POSITION. THIS CAUSED A COLLISION.*AK

 

-DT: WHILE DRIVING, THE CONSUMER FOUND HE WAS UNABLE TO GET THE ENGINE OUT OF 3RD GEAR AS THOUGH IT NEEDED TO BE GEARED DOWN. THE VEHICLE IS AN AUTOMATIC AND THOUGHT IT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. HOWEVER, WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN, IT PRETTY CONSISTENT IN DOING SO. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER SAID IT COULD BE FIXED AND DID REPAIR. DIAGNOSED A SHIFT SOLENOID, WHICH WAS REPLACED. ABOUT 1 DAY LATER AFTER REPAIR, THE SAME THING OCCURRED. RETURNED TO DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VALVE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER TAKING THE VALVE BODY APART, IT WAS FOUND THAT IT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER STATED THE TRANSMISSION WAS THE PROBLEM. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON AND THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME IT HAD ILLUMINATED. SPOKE WITH DEALER ABOUT THIS. THE NEXT DAY, THE GAUGES WORKED BUT THE LED LIGHT WOULD NOT LIGHT UP ALONG WITH THE ODOMETER. AFTER DRIVING HALF A MILE, THE LIGHTS SLOWLY COME ON BUT FELT THIS WAS A SAFETY CONCERN AS IT MAY BE ELECTRICAL. *AK THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT FROM 3RD TO 4TH GEAR. *JB

 

-2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH TRANSMISSION.*MR....TRANSMISSION BANGS WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR AND DOWNSHIFTS HARD FROM 3RD TO 2ND GEAR. REPORTED PROBLEM TO DEALER IN FEBRUARY 2004 AT 3796 MILES. REPAIRED ON MARCH 2, 2004 AS PER BULLETIN 1430080. PROBLEM RECURRED AND WAS REPORTED TO DEALER IN OCTOBER 2004, AND DEALER INDICATED IT WAS NORMAL AS PER BULLETIN 1430424. AT THIS TIME, SERVICE MANAGER PROVIDED BULLETIN 1538220 WHICH STATED THAT PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED IN TRANSMISSION BUILT AFTER FEBRUARY 2004. PROBLEM AGAIN RECURRED IN NOVEMBER 2004 AND MARCH 2005, AND DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS JUST EXCESSIVE DRIVE LINE LASH. CONSUMER REPORTED THIS TO GM, AND THEY INCREASED WARRANTY TERMS TO 5 YEARS/75000 MILES. CONSUMER CLAIMED WARRANRY WAS NO HELP BECAUSE IF DEALER WON'R CORRECT PROBLEM NOW THEY WON'R CORRECT IT LATER. *AK

 

-2500HD W/ALLISON TRANSMISSION. HAVE TAKEN TRUCK IN SEVERAL TIMES TO DEALER BECAUSE WHILE BACKING UP IN REVERSE THE TRANNY SURGES. DEALER KEEPS SAYING THAT THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM
