VOLKSWAGEN OIL CONSUMPTION

Many newer Volkswagens have a problem with excessive oil consumption. The problem has been noted in at least two service bulletins though dealers may initially profess ignorance, and suggest that the excessive consumption is a product of the buyer's imagination.  The service bulletin calls for "Engine-Cylinder De-glazis & Ring Replacement.  Vehicles covered include the Volkswagen Jetta and many other models. 

It does not appear that the oil consumption is an indicator of a bad engine.  However, the value of the vehicle is diminished since oil consumption is one indicator of an engine problem.  Many vehicles do not have low oil indicators so if a driver does not constantly monitor oil levels, he can cause engine damage.  The oil consumption will mean frequent replacement of air filters, additional cost for oil changes, and inconvenience.  Our office evaluates claims for defects including oil
