2002 GRAND CHEROKEE BRAKE PROBLEMS

We represent people who purchased 2001 and 2002 Cherokee and Grand Cherokees with defective brakes and transmission.
One person wrote: "My significant other leases a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and we’re on our second trip to the dealer to fix the front brakes. The last time they said it was warped  rotors. From message boards I’ve read we’re not the only ones with this problem and this lawsuit might indeed get more folks onboard." www.autoblog.com/entry/0771224811266534/

Chrysler has acknowledged the problem through its issuance of a service bulletin
.  One site discusses the Cherokee brake problem:

1. Grand Cherokee front brakes - warped rotors ll 1999-2002 Grand Cherokee WJ models built through May 10, 2002 came equipped with brake calipers made by Teves. They are black in color with an open-sided bracket design. Due to poor caliper centering, the Teves calipers caused the rotors to warp, a problem that has plagued Grand Cherokees. At the very end of the 2002 model year, Jeep changed to "fully-closed" style calipers designed by Akebono. All Grand Cherokee models produced on or after May 11th, 2002 feature the new calipers. International models built on or after August 16th, 2002 also feature the new calipers. To address the warped rotor problem Jeep issued a TSB, #05-003-02. The TSB provided the following information:

TSB 05-003-02B - FRONT BRAKE PULSATION DURING LIGHT TO MODERATE BRAKE APPLICATION
Date: 12/16/02 (supersedes 0500302A Dated June 10, 2002)

Model Year(s): 1999-2002 (WJ models built through May 10, 2002)

Description: Brake roughness or pedal pulsation when the brakes are applied. The customer may experience a vibration of the steering wheel, floor, seat, instrument panel, or a minor pedal pulsation (brake roughness) under light to moderate pedal application. The condition may be caused by excessive thickness variation of the brake rotor surface.

Details: This bulletin involves the replacement of both front brake rotors and caliper assemblies. NOTE: NEW BRAKE ROTORS MUST BE USED WITH THE NEW BRAKE CALIPERS.

Diagnosis:
1. Determine if the front brake vibration/pulsation is caused by excessive thickness variation of either front brake rotor.
2. If excessive thickness variation of the front brake rotor is at fault perform the Repair Procedure.
3. If this bulletin has already been performed, and front brake pulsation/vibration is present, do not perform the Repair Procedure. Investigate other possible cases for front brake pulsation/vibration. http://www.wjjeeps.com/brakes.htm
